Tree of Life Pendant – Sterling Silver
Holly designed this gorgeous Tree of Life pendant as part of a larger commission a little while ago. It was made designed to fit perfectly with the rest of the client’s pieces and was handmade in Sterling Silver. We’re chuffed to say that the client was delighted with her new pendant.

We’ve recently worked with one of our regular clients to design and make a pair of new rings from exisiting pieces of jewellery, including a pair of diamond set earrings. While both rings were handmade they feature contrasting design influences. One ring features a contemporary design in white metal with inset diamonds, the second is of a more tradtional design in yellow gold with a wonderful array of pave set, round brilliant cut diamonds.

We were approached to see if it was possible to make something new from a much loved but unworn ring made from white gold, pink sapphires and diamonds. The ring was being replaced but its owner didn’t want to hide her existing ring away in her jewellery box. “Why not let us turn it into a pendant?” we suggested.

By removing part of the ring shank, shaping the stone’s setting and and making a handmade bale: we created a unique pendant that reflects the styling of the original ring.

A fabulous way of breathing new life into your inherited and unworn jewellery is to have it redesigned and remade into a new piece of jewellery.
The price of precious metals has been increasing in recent years, even Sterling Silver, which was for so long a “cheap” metal has seen its price treble over the past five years. A few years ago a slew of television and newspaper adverts were encouraging people to cash in their spare jewellery, and now, virtually every high street jeweller has a sign in their window offering to buy unwanted jewellery from you. The prices you will be offered for your old and inherited pieces of jewellery in either of these cases will be simply based on the scrap metal price of the weight of the metal in the jewellery with a small extra consideration for any gem stones, in other words a fraction of their real value.
We don’t expect you to come to us with fixed designs or sketches – a vague idea that you’d like to make something from Great-Granny’s engagement ring that you inherited that’s been sitting in your jewellery box or at the back of a drawer is enough for us to get started. We’ll sit down with and talk about what you like in jewellery and what we can make using your pieces, we’ll then produce designs for you.

Keren’s fiancé had given her a gorgeous 18ct white gold and Diamond Engagement Ring but its sinuous shape meant that when they were looking for the perfect wedding band, none of the off-the-shelf versions were going to be right. Keren asked us what we would recommend; “making a custom fit wedding band that fits around your engagement ring.” we replied.

Using Keren’s ring as a template, the 18ct white gold wedding band was carefully handmade to fit perfectly around her engagement ring and was Rhodium plated to give the finished ring a fantastic high shine finish. To ensure that both her wedding band and engagement ring looked fantastic, we renewed the Rhodium plating on her engagement ring just before the big day.

We have been asked to take a look at this gold ring with a view of using its gold to make a new wedding band.
On first glance the ring appears to just be a slightly battered 6mm gold band, one that has taken a few knocks in its time.

When you look inside the ring though, its story begins to reveal itself.

Showing that it is, in fact, two distinct bands that at some point in their history have been joined together.
Hallmarks can tell you so much about older pieces of jewellery.
Chester Hallmarks
The narrower ring bears the makers mark “H.A”, the marks for 22ct gold, the stamp of the Chester Assay Office and the date letter for 1938-39.
Birmingham Hallmarks
The wider ring bears the makers mark “S E”, the marks for 22ct gold, the stamp of the Birmingham Assay office and the date letter for 1849-50.
I’m going to see if I can’t track the Makers Marks down and find out who made the original rings.

After seeing them online, a client fell in love with Holly’s handmade rings – you can see them here – and came to Plush to meet with Holly to talk about creating her perfect engagement ring.
She decided that she wanted a handmade, 18ct White Gold, hammered band that was 1mm in width, set with a single solitaire diamond in a, 18ct Gold rim setting, which was to be drilled allowing more light through the diamond.
We initially made a Sterling Silver and Cubic Zirconia version of the ring, in the client’s ring size which will allow her to try it for size and style. This allowed us to make changes to the style and setting, before making the ring in White Gold and Yellow Gold and setting the hand-picked Diamond.
