Chichester Christmas Lights 2010 – The least festive town in the UK?

Chichester made it onto BBC Breakfast this morning with a piece which went onto the BBC Website titled ‘The Least Festive Town in the UK?‘ news of the lack of christmas lights in the city centre is spreading.

The city council asked local businesses to pay for half the £30,000 they say is needed to maintain, store and erect the christmas lights every year. As far as I am aware this is the first time local businesses were asked to contribute to the costs.

I don’t know if anyone out there remembers what the Chichester christmas lights look like when they are up and running? Let me jog your memory…

PS I’m going to add as many pics of the fantastic window displays and privately funded light shows put together by local businesses in Chichester as I can to this post, if you have some lovely shots of festiveness in Chichester and are on Twitter can you message me @plushjewellery thank you.

Park and Ride Chichester 2010

As is common in many old cities, parking in Chichester on the Saturdays in the lead up to Christmas can be a bit of a nightmare if you are unfamiliar with the layout of the city, it’s idiosyncratic one-way systems and hidden car parks. To aleviate some of your stresses, the really rather useful (and completely free) Park and Ride scheme is running once again for 2010. Simply park your car in the Chichester College car park – see map below:

Then hop on the shuttle bus which takes a circular route around the city centre with convenient dropping off and picking up points for East Street, North Street and at Chichester Cathedral before it heading on once again to the Chichester College car park.

The free Chichester park and ride shuttle runs from 8am – 6pm on the following days:
Saturday 04 December
Saturday 11 December
Saturday 18 December
and for the duration of the week leading up to Christmas Day
Monday 20 December
Tuesday 21 December
Wednesday 22 December
Thursday 23 December
Friday 24 December

Although, why the free Chichester park and ride is only running up until 6pm on Thursday 23rd December when there is late night shopping in Chichester I have absolutely no idea!

Hope this is useful information for you – drop a comment below if it is or you would like any more information.

Late Night Shopping Chichester 2010

Well, we’re on the big run in towards Christmas which means late night shopping in Chichester. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to pop in to Chichester on a Thursday evening and avoid the Saturday crowds (also parking is free after 6pm in most of the car parks, saving you a pound or two). If you look at the District Council website they indicate that late night shopping in Chichester is happening on 9th December, 16th December and 23rd December – this isn’t completely true as a number of shops are open for late night shopping this Thursday 2nd December, we are opening for Thursday late night shopping from 9th December.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Well, we may not have snow down here in Chichester – yet (I’m keeping an eye on the current forecast, a light sprinkling would be rather lovely) but we’ve been turning Plush all christmasy for the festive season. If you pop in between now and December 24th there’s a fair chance that you’ll find us humming along to the Doris Day Christmas Album.

PS you may have heard that Chichester isn’t doing christmas lights this year http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-11540184 but the local independent shop owners are all going the extra mile to ensure that we have a fantastically festive atmosphere in the city – watch this space for pics.

Lights, Reindeer, Fireworks…

Saturday, sees the switching on of the christmas lights in Chichester (they’re LED and eco-friendly noless). The city will be a hive of activity all day; if you’ve got little uns they can have their piccy taken with real, live reindeers who will be outside Marks & Spencer in East Street (actually, I believe children of all ages can have a photo with the reindeer), shops will be bedecked in their festive guises (we’re getting the snow spray out this year!!), the mayor of Chichester will be switching the lights on at 5pm, street entertainers will be entertaining the shoppers and the whole thing wraps up with a mahoosive fireworks display, last year it sounded like the Royal Artillery were practicing on the cathedral green.

The free Park & Ride shuttle service also commences it’s seasonal service on the same day, see yesterday’s blog post for more info, which eases the frustrations of parking in an incredibly old city.

Oh and if you’re a member if Qype, we have a downloadable discount voucher which is valid until the end of Nov, so you can pick up a few glittering Christmas presents and save yourself a few pennies on the same day.

With the countdown to Christmas in full swing, the popular annual free park and ride service for visitors, shoppers and commuters will operate here in Chichester on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas, starting on November 28.

The shuttle service runs from Chichester College of Technology car park and runs into the city centre with drop-off and pick-up points at Eastgate (opposite the Cattle Market), North Street, and at the cathedral in West Street, before the bus returns to the college car park.

The service operates on Nov 28th, Dec 5th, 12th and 19th and the weekdays running up to Christmas – Dec 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th (Christmas Eve)

Late night Thursdays also give shoppers and workers the opportunity to buy their Christmas presents at a more leisurely pace with most shops in Chichester staying open until 8pm on the four Thursdays leading up to Christmas – (*edit – Thursday 26th November is not a late night shopping night after all) 3rd, 10th and 17th Dec.

We’ll be open at Plush Jewellery in Southgate, pop in and say hello.
