Hazel Atkinson Anodized Aluminium Jewellery
A couple of days ago I mentioned that we now have anodized aluminium jewellery by Hazel Atkinson available. I’ll come clean and admit that I’m having a couple of issues when it comes to this gorgeously colourful jewellery; a) I keep typing adenoids instead of anodized and my spell checker won’t pick it up and b) it’s flying out of the door before I can get it photographed and onto the internet to share with everyone.
What is anodized? Here’s the science bit; Anodizing is a process which can be applied to aluminium to cause a layer of aluminium oxide to grow on the metals surface. This layer is transparent, but porous, and can absorb certain dyes and inks, as well as grease, dirt and moisture. Work made of clean, pure aluminium is suspended in an acid solution, and an electrical current is passed through it. The current will flow from the work (which is the positive element, the anode) through the electrolyte to the cathode (the negative element) and causing a chemical reaction between the oxygen in the water and the aluminium, building a layer of oxide on the surface.
I did manage to grab a few bangles from Hazel’s Heaven and Earth Collection and get them to pose for pictures before they were snapped up this weekend and that’s how I’ve managed to be able to show you the picture above. We’ve also got pendants and earrings and I’ll be getting them online as long as they stay still.
