Independent Shops and Independent Jewellers in Chichester
One of the great things about Chichester, other than it being the physical home of Plush Jewellery, is that there is still the opportunity for independent shops and traders to thrive.
Take just a couple of steps off of the main streets into the historic side streets and you’ll find more fantastic independent shops and business than you can shake a stick at (stick shaking in Chichester isn’t something to be encouraged, though I don’t think may people will bat an eyelid if you do).
I’ve been meaning to collate a list of these Independent shops in Chichester and, it being a less than sunny Bank Holiday Monday here on the South Coast, I’ve popped the beginning of this listing up and it can be found over on the main Plush Jewellery website at http://plushjewellery.co.uk/chichesterindependents.asp.
We’ve noticed since first opening in 2006 that Chichester has been steadily gaining a reputation for quality independent jewellers and we’re incredibly proud to be part of that movement. Chichester is just an hour and a half from central London and is an easy run from Brighton in the East and Bournemouth in the West and we’ve been finding that more and more of our customers and clients commissioning handmade jewellery are travelling from these parts of the country. If you are planning to visit us, do check our opening times on the Plush Jewellery website (we are open Monday through Saturday as a general rule but opening hours may change due to Bank Holidays and special events)
I’ve created a little Google Map to help you get your bearings

Be Terribly Organised and Stock Up On Christmas Presents…
We sold our first Christmas present the other day. Well it was the first time this year that someone has said to us ‘I’m buying this for a Christmas present.’ This may have been due to the fact that the customer had just picked up a bargain.
We’ve been having a little bit of a spring clean at Plush, tidying those slightly forgotten corners and rediscovering pieces. “This jewellery shouldn’t be hidden away,” we though “it should be worn, people should be exclaiming, ‘that’s gorgeous!’”. That’s why we’ve reduced the price of certain pieces at Plush Chichester.
Come and see us, 09:30 – 17:30, Monday – Saturday and pick up a Christmas present or two – maybe a really early Christmas present for yourself.
Two Go Mad at Artists Open Houses
We took a trip along the coast to Brighton yesterday (15th May) to look around the phenomenon that is Artist Open Houses www.aoh.org.uk We hadn’t been before and, as you know, we’re always keen to track down talented designer makers we haven’t met before and the Open Houses seemed a perfect opportunity to meet a lot of new people and see a lot of work.
Oh, how we’d underestimated the sheer scale of this event! The fab Elizabeth Anne Norris http://eanjewellery.wordpress.com/2011/05/08/open-house-and-new-designs/ who we knew through the power of the Twitter www.twitter.com/eanjewellery had generously sent us a map showing all of the trails and the location of each of the Open Houses. We thought we’d be terribly organised and went through the listing, highlighting the houses where jewellers were showing. A plan of attach was formulated; don’t plan to see too much in one day, start at the furthest point out and work out way back, try not to double back on ourselves too much through the course of the day.
Ok, I didn’t know that the route up through Fiveways on the Fiveways Artists Group Trail http://fivewaysartists.com/ was quite so uphill (when you set off from Brighton Station) ‘Up we go! Up we go!’ said the Mole. When we felt we’d walked quite far enough thank you, we started exploring. So many houses, so much to see, we probably only covered a very small percentage of what there was to see (we only really covered parts of the Fiveways Artists Group Trial, Beyond the Level http://www.beyond-the-level.org.uk/ and some of the Independent houses) and were constantly distracted by the gorgeous ceramics, paintings, prints, textiles, sculpture and all manner of other lovely things, oh, and tea and cake, virtually every house was a tea and cake fan’s dream. A stonking Sunday roast was enjoyed at the Open House http://www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/open-house and when we finally collapsed onto the train home we were exhausted but enlivened by all of the art and fantastic artistic hospitality.
Artists Open Houses continues for the next two weekends, pop along and treat yourself to a fantastic day out. You can get a feel for the festival over on their Flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/1284841@N21
There Will Be Christmas Lights in Chichester This Year
I know it’s only May so talking about Christmas seems rather premature but the Chichester Christmas Lights for 2011 had a deadline hanging over their head. Funds needed to be in place at the begining of the month to ensure that the city didn’t have a second unlit festive season.
We were dubbed ‘The Least Festive Town in the UK‘ on the BBC News last year and that hurt, that hurt a lot.
So it’s really rather exciting, in an understated and very British way, to be able to say that Chichester will have Christmas lights this year. Donations arrived at the City Council offices thick and fast and massive thanks must got to the Anonymous donor who donated £5000 a full list of donations can be found over on the Chichester City council website.
We won’t seem like a bunch of miserable old Grinches this year then, which is a good thing, but I ask, who on earth thinks about Christmas in May?!

The Peregrines Are Back at Chichester Cathedral – you can watch them live…
…and you don’t have to climb up the tower to see them, they have their own webcam. http://www.rspb.org.uk/webcams/birdsofprey/chichester.aspx
Also,
“From Wednesday 13th April the RSPB will be based at the Cathedral for its Date with Nature project, offering visitors a rare chance to watch the birds at close range without disturbing them. Visitors will be able to view images from the nest, and use binoculars and telescopes to watch the birds flying and perching on the pinnacles and turrets of the Cathedral.
At first, the project will be based at the Cloisters Café. At the end of May, when the young start to learn to fly, the RSPB will move out to the Cathedral Green, in front of the Cathedral. The project runs until 10th July, and entrance to the Cathedral and use of the viewing equipment are free of charge.” Read more over at the Peregrines at Chichester Cathedral page on the Chichester Cathedral website and over at the RSPB A Date With Nature page.Do You Subscribe?

Park and Ride Chichester 2010
As is common in many old cities, parking in Chichester on the Saturdays in the lead up to Christmas can be a bit of a nightmare if you are unfamiliar with the layout of the city, it’s idiosyncratic one-way systems and hidden car parks. To aleviate some of your stresses, the really rather useful (and completely free) Park and Ride scheme is running once again for 2010. Simply park your car in the Chichester College car park – see map below:
Then hop on the shuttle bus which takes a circular route around the city centre with convenient dropping off and picking up points for East Street, North Street and at Chichester Cathedral before it heading on once again to the Chichester College car park.
The free Chichester park and ride shuttle runs from 8am – 6pm on the following days:
Saturday 04 December
Saturday 11 December
Saturday 18 December
and for the duration of the week leading up to Christmas Day
Monday 20 December
Tuesday 21 December
Wednesday 22 December
Thursday 23 December
Friday 24 December
Although, why the free Chichester park and ride is only running up until 6pm on Thursday 23rd December when there is late night shopping in Chichester I have absolutely no idea!
Hope this is useful information for you – drop a comment below if it is or you would like any more information.
